The death of a young protester in southeastern Turkey prompted thousands to turn out in Istanbul on Saturday, in what was a mostly peaceful demonstration.

The 18-year-old man was killed and at least nine others were wounded Friday while protesting the construction of a new security outpost near the city of Diyarbakir.

Protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails, setting two tents and a container building on fire, the Turkish Interior Ministry said. Turkish security forces opened fire after the group failed to heed warnings to disperse, the ministry said.

In a show of solidarity, demonstrators gathered Saturday at the entrance to Istanbul’s Taksim Square, the scene of weeks of sometimes violent protests earlier this month. Police finally moved the crowd away.

More than 20 people were detained by authorities.
