Authorities in France announced Friday they are taking steps to drop a breach-of-trust investigation into former President Nicolas Sarkozy.
“Despite the violence of the calumnies, the truth always ends up triumphing,” and “the Bordeaux prosecutor just demonstrated that,” said Sarkozy’s attorney, Thierry Herzog, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.
Along with Sarkozy’s case, the Bordeaux prosecutor’s office also announced Friday it asked to drop a probe of former Cabinet minister Eric Woerth, BFMTV said.
An investigative judge in March placed Sarkozy under formal investigation for breach of trust, accusing him of taking advantage of elderly L’Oreal cosmetic heiress Liliane Bettencourt to help fund his 2007 campaign, Sarkozy’s attorney said, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV.
