A French appeals court Wednesday upheld the life prison sentence of Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, the notorious terrorist known as “Carlos the Jackal,” CNN affiliate BFM-TV reported.
The Venezuelan-born Sanchez, now 63, was convicted of killing 11 people in a series of bombings in the 1980s. He has taken credit for more than 80 killings in a career that included taking hostages at an OPEC conference and the killing of two French secret agents.
The son of a wealthy Marxist lawyer, Sanchez was given the middle name of Soviet founder Vladimir Lenin and joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the 1970s. He was captured in 1994 after being expelled from Syria and had already been convicted of killing the two French agents and a fellow revolutionary.
