Dynamo Kyiv required an 88th minute goal to ensure their progress to the Champions League main draw, after Borussia Monchengladbach produced a spirited display on Wednesday that came within minutes of overturning a first leg deficit.
Monchengladbach trailed 3-1 after the first leg, with the Ukrainian side thoroughly outclassing them on their own ground. Dynamo defender Yehven Khacheridi have the visitors hope in the 70th minute headed a fine cross from Juan Arango into his own net.
Eight minutes later, Arango connected with a corner to head past Koval in the Kyiv net and put the German side within one goal of a miraculous place in Thurday’s Champions League draw.
With two minutes to go, and the visitors pouring forward in search of a vital third goal, Kyiv launched a quick counter attack that finished with Nigerian striker Ideye Brown chipping Gladbach goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to seal his side’s place in the champions League main draw.
In Glasgow, Celtic enjoyed a dominant win over Swedish side Helsingborg. The Scottish giants came into the game with a 2-0 first leg advantage, and their progress into the main draw never looked in doubt as the visitors struggled to impose themselves on the game.
When Gary Hooper opened the scoring after half an hour, the supporters started celebrating their side’s progression to the group stages for the first time since the 2008/09 season.
Greek international Giorgos Samaras was outstanding for Neil Lennon’s men, and it was his shot that led to the corner which Hooper scored from.
With two minutes left to play, Kris Commons whipped in a corner that victor Wanyama powered past the helpless Helsingborgs goalkeeper to properly launch the celebrations in Glasgow.
French side Lille required extra time to beat FC Copenhagen, after Lucas Digne’s 43rd minute strike helped overturn the Danish side’s first leg advantage.
The two sides failed to find a decisive goal until the final minute of the first half of extra time. With the referee looking at his watch, Nolan Roux curled a beautiful cross into the Copenhagen box, with Tulio De Melo rising above the defense to power a header past the helpless goalkeeper and send his side through toe the group stages.
Spartak Moscow will join their compatriots Zenit St. Petersburg in this year’s Champions League after they held Turkish side Fenerbache to a 1-1 draw, in Turkey, to record a 3-2 aggregate win.
Six minutes in, Spartak’s Irish winger Aiden McGeady broke clear on the right and delivered a dangerous low cross that Brazilian striker Ari slotted past Fenerbache goalkeeper Mert Gunok to give his side a perfect start.
Fenerbache dominated from there on, having 25 efforts on goal, but only managing to score one goal in the 69th minute. Moussa Sow flicked was the last player to touch the ball after a fine corner from Alex caused panic in the Muscovite side’s six yard box.
It wasn’t enough though, and Spartak go into Thursday’s main draw.
Romanian side CFR Cluj cemented their place in the main draw with 1-0 win over Swiss side Basel to secure a 3-1 aggregate result.
Greek striker Pantelis Kapetanos sealed the win on the night with a powerful header into the top corner after 20 minutes.
Basel will be disappointed to have failed to make the group stages, after a successful appearance last year that included ousting Manchester United from the competition.
