Mark Webber’s thrilling victory over Fernando Alonso at the British Grand Prix has seen the Australian close the gap on his Ferrari rival at the top of the world championship standings.

Red Bull’s Webber overtook Alonso with three laps to go of the race at Silverstone and after nine races has cut the Spaniard’s lead to just 13 points.

Both drivers were able to edge away from defending double world champion Sebastian Vettel, who came third in the race. He now trails Alonso by 29 points.

Lewis Hamilton’s eighth place means he scored just four points, losing ground on those at the top, while Kimi Raikkonen’s fifth place helped him close on his British rival.

With Webber and Vettel both finishing in the top three, Red Bull extended their advantage in the constructors’ championship over Ferrari to 64 points.
