Spanish King Juan Carlos underwent hip replacement surgery in Madrid Saturday morning following an accidental fall abroad, according to the Royal Household.

The 74-year-old king was hospitalized Friday night upon his arrival in Madrid from Botswana, where he suffered an accidental fall, the Royal Household said in a statement.

He had suffered a fracture on three fragments of his right hip, associated with osteoporosis, the statement said.

Surgeons reconstructed the damaged area by inserting a prosthetic hip, the statement said.

The Royal Household will release more details later.
