The 2014 Ryder Cup at Scotland’s Gleneagles Hotel will take place between September 26-18, organizers announced Tuesday.
It will be the 40th staging of the biennial golfing clash between the United States and Europe and only the second to be held in Scotland.
The Ryder Cup will next be contested in September 2012 at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
“As the home of golf, Scotland is well placed to host the best Ryder Cup in the competition’s history when it arrives at Gleneagles in 2014,” Scotland’s first minister Alex Salmond told the tournament’s website.
“I am delighted to announce today that the 2014 event will be held over the weekend of September 26-28, allowing the tens of thousands of spectators expected to attend to begin making their travel plans in earnest.”
European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills agreed with Salmond, adding: “Since Scotland was awarded the staging of The Ryder Cup ten years ago, we have all been looking forward to visiting Gleneagles in 2014.
“We are pleased to announce the dates for the 40th biennial contest today here at Gleneagles itself.”
The last edition of the competition was at the Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, with Europe clinching a dramatic 14 ½ 13 ½ victory over their U.S. opponents.
Having initially been conceived as a contest between Britain and the U.S. in 1927, Irish players were introduced in 1973 before it became a match between America and Europe in 1979.
Since the match has been between European and U.S. players, Europe have recorded eight victories to the U.S.’s seven with one contest ending in a tie.
