Australia’s Aaron Baddeley and Hunter Mahan of the United States lead going into the final round of the Tour Championship on nine-under-par 201at East Lakes.
Baddeley came to the front with a superb six-under 64 with Mahan posting a 66 in the third round of the final event of the PGA Tour’s lucrative FedEx Cup playoffs.
The winner of the series picks up $10 million and both men have excellent chances of claiming the prize but Baddeley is more concerned about claiming a place as a wildcard pick in the Internationals team to face the United States in the Presidents Cup.
“For me, it’s a motivator,” Baddeley said as he tries to get the nod from captain Greg Norman.
He eagled the par-four fourth and then posted four consecutive birdies from the 13th hole Saturday.
Baddeley’s fellow Australian Jason Day and South Korea’s KJ Choi were two shots adrift of Baddeley and Mahan.
World number one Luke Donald of England shot a 70 and was only three shots adrift of the leaders along with American Bill Haas (69) at six-under 204.
American star Phil Mickelson also has a chance after shooting a three-under 67 for 205. “I think I can make a run tomorrow, ” he told gathered reporters.
Webb Simpson topped the FedEx standings going into the Tour Championship and a last hole birdie move him into a tie for 15th at one-under 209.
If he can move up Sunday he could still collect the $10 million prize but would be relying on other players, such as Donald, falling short.
