A massive cargo ship lost power on Tuesday and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing the 1.6-mile bridge to collapse into the Patapsco River.
Two construction workers have been found dead, and four others are presumed dead. They were repairing potholes on the bridge early in the morning.
"We have an unspeakable tragedy," Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott told CNN.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said the crew's ship notified officials it had lost power prior to the crash, allowing officials to stop the flow of traffic so more cars were not on the bridge. He called the bridge collapse a "shocking and heartbreaking" event for the people of Maryland who have used the bridge for 47 years.
The collapse and the resulting closure of the port will have major repercussions on the city's economy as well as on the country's supply chain, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Wednesday. The Baltimore port is the largest in the US for autos and light trucks, handling a record 850,000 vehicles last year.
