Orca calf stranded in British Columbia lagoon for more than a month swims out on her own

An orca calf that spent over a month stranded in a remote lagoon on Vancouver Island off the west coast of Canada swam out of the lagoon on her own early Friday morning, according to the Ehattesaht First Nation.

A 33-year-old Texas man was indicted Tuesday on a murder charge in the February 2022 killing of 9-year-old Arlene Alvarez – nearly two years after another grand jury had declined to indict him in connection with the child’s fatal shooting.

A bill prohibiting marriage between first cousins is headed to the Tennessee governor’s desk after the state house overwhelmingly voted to pass the measure Thursday.

An endangered whale was killed this week most likely by a ship strike. Less than 360 of the species remain

Another endangered North Atlantic right whale turned up dead off the coast of Virginia late last month. A necropsy found the whale, a mother to a young calf, had suffered “catastrophic injuries” consistent with being struck by a ship, according to a release from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
