Melissa Macaya is a Senior Live News Editor at CNN Digital where she oversees live digital coverage of political breaking news and elections from the Washington bureau. Her team works alongside CNN’s global newsroom to cover the top breaking news stories of the day in a dynamic and real-time format, using visual journalism, live streams and on the ground reporting to inform and engage millions of users across platforms.

In her current role, Macaya coordinates and leads writers and producers who cover major breaking news events at the White House, Congress, Pentagon, Justice Department and key agencies. She has helped direct digital live coverage of the Trump administration, impeachment trials, the 2020 presidential election, Biden transition, the 2022 midterm elections, Jan. 6 Capitol riot investigations, Supreme Court confirmations and more.

Born and raised in Venezuela, Macaya has also gained extensive experience covering the US Hispanic community, Latin America and US politics for audiences in the region. She was a producer for CNN en Español’s political shows and helped lead the Latin American network’s digital coverage of Washington while covering US presidential campaigns from the bureau and field. She was nominated for three news Emmy awards alongside her team as a producer for the show.

Prior to joining CNN, Macaya helped lead live video and breaking news coverage at The Washington Post and was a fellow with NBC News in their Washington bureau. She has a master’s degree in journalism from Georgetown University and is an adjunct professor in the program. She serves as Region 3 Director of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), an organization that aims to increase the representation and influence of Hispanics in the news industry. Macaya is fluent in Spanish and is passionate about amplifying stories about the US Hispanic community and Latin American region.
