Matthew J. Friedman is an award-winning journalist and CNN Senior Producer based in New York. He covers conflict, civil unrest, and gun violence as well as breaking news stories in the U.S. and around the world.

Most recently, Friedman received the prestigious Peabody and George Polk Awards for his investigative work with Shimon Prokupecz exposing the police failure at the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas. He was also a part of the CNN team recognized with a Columbia-duPont Award for their work in Ukraine in 2022.

Before joining CNN’s New York Bureau he was a producer at CNN International covering global news stories like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, gang violence and the presidential assassination in Haiti, and the devastation in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. He also field produced weeks of special coverage in Subsaharan Africa and the Middle East with Richard Quest. He joined CNN in 2014 as a writer covering business news from the New York Stock Exchange and the economic fallout across Europe from Brexit and the Greek debt crisis.

Friedman grew up in Philadelphia. He graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in Political Science and International Relations.
