Irene Nasser is a Senior News Editor for CNN, based at the network’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong. She manages the International Desk, which includes handling breaking news stories, field teams, and logistics.

Nasser joined CNN from Al Jazeera English, where she was based at its global headquarters in Doha, Qatar. At AJE, she was responsible for overseeing teams in the field, breaking news, and managing planning coverage. She also worked as an on-ground coordinator during major news events and as a fill-in correspondent.

Nasser has over a decade of experience in journalism, media and documentary making, working extensively across the Middle East. She is fluent in Arabic and Hebrew and was based in Jerusalem for several years as a field producer. While in Jerusalem she covered the 2014 Gaza war, the Syrian uprising and rise of ISIL from the borders of Syria with Turkey and Jordan, as well as the refugee crisis across the Balkan region. She has worked for several other major news outlets including the UK’s Channel 4 News, VICE, the New York Times and the Washington Post. Her feature and long-form stories include pieces on refugees escaping ISIL, ISIL defectors, gas smuggling from Syria, and a report on antiquities being smuggled out of Iraq and Syria.

Nasser has won a Peabody Award for co-producing a documentary on a boy living in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in Jerusalem called ‘My Neighbourhood’. She has a Master’s Degree in International Relations from American University in Washington DC and is a 2017 Ochberg Fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
