Sand storms are becoming more frequent and intense, leading to illness and death, and causing billions of dollars in damage worldwide. Climate scientist Diana Francis is researching dust storms in Abu Dhabi to help determine how dust from the region moves around the planet.

Soon to be operating from the International Space Station, NASA's Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) mission will comprehensively measure the composition of Earth's mineral dust source regions to help scientists understand how windborne dust particles heat or cool our planet as they move through the atmosphere. In addition to potentially influencing warming on regional and global scales, dust can affect cloud formation, air quality, and human health. When deposited in the ocean, dust can also trigger blooms of microscopic algae. To make these measurements, EMIT will use an imaging spectrometer to measure visible and infrared light reflecting from surfaces below. EMIT is scheduled to launch from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on June 7, 2022, as part of SpaceX's 25th commercial resupply services mission for NASA. This reel includes soundbites from EMIT mission team members, animations of how EMIT will operate on the International Space Station and collect data, as well as testing that was done at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the instrument prior to launch. Last year, NASA launched a new satellite-based instrument set to revolutionize how dust is detected across the globe. The Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) instrument could help researchers better predict dust storms, and gain information on how dust contributes to climate change.

The Indigenous Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau territory in Rondônia measures 1,867,117 hectares and it is the most important of Rondônia because of its biodiversity and the economic value of the water available. Throughout the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous Land live 600 people from the groups Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau (or Jupaú), Amondawa, Oro Win and Cabixi as well as three isolated peoples; Yvyparaquawara, Jurureí and a third which is not named). In the history of the Indigenous Land there have been successive invasions by loggers, rubber tappers, farmers, and land grabbers but it suffers in particular from land grabbing and illegal livestock. The invasions intensified from the 1980s and persist to this day. A new wave of invasions has intensified threats to the people of the Uru-Eu-Wau-Wau Indigenous Land since the 2018 election campaign.
