About

Eoin McSweeney is a Multiplatform Producer working from CNN’s Middle Eastern hub, Abu Dhabi. He creates stories across CNN’s TV, digital, and social platforms.

The Irish-native focuses on business, politics and technology news and features across the Middle East and Africa. McSweeney produces and writes on the network’s flagship regional programme Connect the World with Becky Anderson, before redesigning scripts for multi-digital projects, which often involve travel and field work. He also helped launch and works on the Middle East newsletter, a tri-weekly publication that covers the big stories from around the region.

He has led production across interviews with high-profile and news making guests, including the world’s best chess player Magnus Carlsen, Ireland’s former and future prime minister Leo Varadkar and New Zealand’s foreign minister Nanaia Mahuta, on her first overseas trip. McSweeney has also handled digital production of interviews with world cup winner Kylian Mbappé, former Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, and World Food Programme director David Beasley.

Formerly a digital reporter, McSweeney spent several months on CNN Africa’s digital newsdesk, covering Uganda’s contested 2021 general election, the initial stages of the Ethiopia’s Tigray crisis, and Namibia’s anti-femicide protests. In the hours after news broke of the Lekki Tollgate massacre, his initial reporting of eye-witness accounts placed CNN at the center of the story, eventually leading to an award-winning investigation. While on the desk, he produced long-form content covering vaccine inequality on the continent, China’s coal mining operations and Nigeria’s blasphemy laws.

McSweeney started on the London business news desk at CNN in 2020, producing editorial, video, packages and other content. While there, he was a planning producer on shows such as First Move with Julia Chatterley and Quest Means Business. His feature piece “Voices of the Pandemic” became a long-running vignette series which featured across the network.

Before joining CNN, McSweeney worked at the World Bank and the Financial Times. He holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and Politics from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor’s degree in International Law from University College Cork.
