Al Goodman is CNN’s award-winning Madrid correspondent. He reports on camera in English and in Spanish for CNN’s networks.

In Spain, he has covered the ebola crisis, fatal attacks by Basque terrorists, the long economic crisis with high unemployment and street protests, as well as an earthquake and the deadly crashes of a Madrid airliner, and a passenger train.

As Spain’s football team won a record treble of trophies – Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 – Goodman covered the boisterous fan zones watching the games on big screens. He’s reported on Champions League titles for Real Madrid and FC Barcelona and their fierce rivalry.

He covered two trips by Pope Benedict XVI to Spain, helped CNN cover three U.S. presidential visits to Spain, reported on three Spanish royal weddings, the royal family’s problems and the abdication of King Juan Carlos, in favor of his son, King Felipe VI. And he’s covered Pamplona’s running of the bulls.

Goodman joined CNN full-time in March 2000, after freelancing for CNN for eight years. He was among the first international correspondents on the scene of the Madrid train bombings in March 2004. He also has covered terrorist attacks in Istanbul and their aftermath in Casablanca.

He has reported from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport on the search for NSA leaker Edward Snowden, on Portugal’s economic woes and football triumphs, and on a big earthquake in Morocco.

Goodman’s won a National Headliner Award as part of CNN’s Investigation Team covering the September 11th attacks and their aftermath, including links to Spain; a Peabody Award for contributing to CNN’s coverage of Hurricane Katrina, when Goodman, from Madrid, located people trapped inside the New Orleans Convention Center and got them on the phone live with CNN; an Alfred I. DuPont Columbia University Award for aiding CNN’s coverage of the tsunami disaster in South Asia; and an Emmy Award, as part of CNN’s team that implemented the use of a portable, digital newsgathering system.

Goodman earlier freelanced in Spain for National Public Radio, Business Week and the Wine Spectator magazine. For four-and-a-half years, just before joining CNN full-time, he freelanced concurrently for the New York Times and CNN, often covering breaking news for both organizations on the same day.

He is a co-author of ‘The World on a String: How to Become a Freelance Foreign Correspondent’, a primer of advice and anecdotes that has been used at American journalism schools.

Goodman, an American, graduated from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Fluent in Spanish, he has travelled throughout Latin America and reported from the region.
