The Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump β€” only the third impeachment trial in US history β€” ended with Trump's acquittal on February 5.

The trial began January 21 as the senators, who served as jurors, were sworn in. John Roberts, the chief justice of the United States, presided over the trial.

Trump's attempts to pressure Ukraine to investigate Hunter Biden and Joe Biden, his potential political rival, were at the center of the President's impeachment trial.

Trump has repeatedly made unfounded and false claims to allege that the Bidens acted improperly in Ukraine. There is no evidence of wrongdoing by either Joe or Hunter Biden.

On December 18, the Democratic-controlled House voted almost entirely along party lines to charge Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

On February 5, the Republican-controlled Congress acquitted Trump on both articles of impeachment. The vote was 52-48 on abuse of power, with Republican Sen. Mitt Romney joining the 47 Democrats in voting guilty. All 53 Republican senators voted not guilty on obstruction of Congress.
