US Sen. Kamala Harris will be the next vice president of the United States, CNN projects.

She will be the first woman to hold the office. She will also be the nation's first Black and South Asian vice president.

"While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last," she said in her first speech to the nation as vice president-elect.

Harris, a California Democrat who previously served as the state's attorney general, launched her own presidential campaign in January 2019 and promised to be a fighter "for the people." She ended her campaign in December, telling her supporters that the campaign didn't have the financial resources to continue.

During her campaign, Harris' allies believed that her life's work as a prosecutor would help set her apart from a crowded Democratic field. Her signs carried her campaign theme "Kamala Harris for the people" — the words that she spoke each time she rose in the courtroom as a prosecutor.
