Angela Bassett has won best supporting actress for her role in "Black Panther, Wakanda Forever."

Jennifer Hudson read her name aloud as the winner, saying "Angela Bassett baby!"

Bassett had a speech ready on her phone, saying that courage, faith, and patience are required in a life with many unexpected detours.

"I stand here grateful," she told the crowd, thanking producers, her team, and quoted her mother as saying, "good things come to those who pray."

She thanked Marvel and Disney, the cast and the crew for embarking on the movie journey together.

Finally, she remembered the late Chadwick Boseman, and thanked the Marvel fans for the love.

Actor Ke Huy Quan has won the award for best supporting actor in a motion picture for his role as Waymond Wang in the movie "Everything Everywhere All at Once."

Before his winsome turn in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” Quan was best known for two very popular films — from roughly 40 years ago.

The actor was first discovered in Steven Spielberg’s epic sequel “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” in 1984 as Indy’s sidekick Short Round, before portraying Data in another ’80s classic, “Goonies,” one year later. His comeback in 2022’s artful and inventive sleeper hit “Everything Everywhere” has been just one of many of the film’s crowning achievements.

"I'm here because I'm Black," Jerrod Carmichael told the crowd of his hosting duties.

Calling out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the Golden Globes, for not having a single Black member since George Floyd died, he said that he was at home drinking tea when he got a call from producers asking him to host.

Instead, the producer told him he is charming, talented and one of the greatest comedians of a generation.

Carmichael said he called a friend, Avery, who asked what he was being paid. When he answered "$500,000," she advised him he'd better take the job.

The Golden Globe awards are now underway — and back on television after being taken off the airwaves last year.

The Globes, which celebrate some of the best movies and TV shows of the year, come as its organizers in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association work to redeem themselves from controversy.

Jerrod Carmichael is hosting for the first time. There is also a star-studded list of presenters — including Jennifer Coolidge, Hilary Swank, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ana de Armas.

Jenna Ortega, the star of the hit Netflix show “Wednesday,” which has been nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, told E! News she feels like Hollywood is starting to open its doors to more Latinx people.

"I feel very fulfilled," she added.

Ortega is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for her role as Wednesday Addams in the show.

The list of nominees also features several other Latinx people, including Selena Gomez for her role in "Only Murders in the Building," Aubrey Plaza in "White Lotus," Diego Calva in the film "Babylon” and Diego Luna for his part in “Andor."

As for the future of “Wednesday,” Ortega said she wants to see season 2 take a darker turn and embrace “the horror aspect a little bit more.” While fans wait for more episodes, she said a writers room just got together to develop the next chapter.

After a history punctuated by dysfunction and scandal, the Golden Globes struck a TV deal with NBC in the 1990s that solidified their place as a major TV and awards event. Now, after another controversy drove the ceremony off the air in 2022, the Globes return to NBC Tuesday for an 80th anniversary dogged by questions as to how diluted and damaged the brand might be.

The latest troubles began almost two years ago, in February 2021, when the Los Angeles Times published a detailed story documenting the lack of Black members within the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which presents the awards, and potential ethical transgressions related to its then-roster of 87 international journalists.

The HFPA was thrown into crisis mode, with Hollywood figures distancing themselves from the ceremony. In response, a group of publicists called upon the HFPA to implement “profound and lasting change” for its “pervasive practice of discriminatory behavior, unprofessionalism, ethical impropriety and alleged financial corruption.”

In their letter, the publicists added that they could not advise their clients to take part in the Globes without the organization addressing those concerns.

NBC dropped the broadcast that May. Tom Cruise announced that he would return his three Globe trophies. By August, the HFPA laid out plans for a series of reforms that included expanding its roster of voting members and pledging to bring more people of color into the body.

Since then, skepticism has lingered about the HFPA’s progress, and whether studios, publicists and high-profile stars would return after a non-televised ceremony was rather quietly held last year.

In September, NBC announced that it would again broadcast the Globes, and various performers have already agreed to appear at the event, which will be hosted by comic Jerrod Carmichael and honor Eddie Murphy with a career-achievement award.
