Inmates donate money to keep kids out of prison
Former prison warden Percy Pitzer, who worked in the federal system for three decades, believes he can help reduce the American prison population. Half of parents in state prison say they also had a family member incarcerated while they were growing up, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. The answer, Pitzer says, lies in breaking that cycle.
That is what led him to start the Creative Corrections Foundation, which awards scholarships to the children of inmates. Since the foundation began in 2012, it has awarded 77 scholarships totaling $77,000. Along with corporate donations, Pitzer is also reaching out to inmates themselves, asking them to donate money from their prison jobs. With 2.3 million people incarcerated in the U.S., the scholarship money is adding up.
