The Kincade Fire, which has now burned about 10,000 acres, started close to a PG&E transmission tower in Sonoma County which malfunctioned around that time, PG&E said at a press conference Thursday night.
They became aware of the outage of a high-voltage transmission line minutes before the Kincade Fire started Wednesday night, officials said. According to a report, the outage occurred at about 9:20 p.m.
According to an incident fact sheet from Cal Fire, the Kincade Fire started at approximately 9:27 p.m.
On Thursday morning, a PG&E employee patrolling the area was alerted by Cal Fire to “what appears to be a broken jumper on one of our transmission towers,” said PG&E CEO Bill Johnson.
Jumpers are wires that “jumps” the conductor over the insulator, Johnson said.
The 43-year-old tower was in excellent condition and recently inspected, he said.
PG&E are continuing to investigate, but the discovery “does not actually tell us what caused the fire or where it started,” he said, adding that Cal Fire investigators would determine the cause.
PG&E has been criticized in recent years for the role its equipment played in catastrophic California blazes, including last year’s Camp Fire, which killed 85 people.
