Nighttime trains: Father-and-son train photography team Robin Coombes and Taliesin Coombes have been traveling across the world capturing photographs of railways and trains at night. They took this shot at the Tower 18 junction at Wells Street and Lake Street, in Chicago.

Enigmatic shots: "We never use flash and rarely use a tripod, so we have to work with whatever light is available," Coombes tells CNN Travel. Pictured here: a London Midland and Scottish Railway steam train spotted through the fog at Aisgill, in England's Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Capturing the moment: "We love to travel and will always take what we see, sometimes just because we happen to be there," says Coombes. In Wroclow, Poland the Coombes took this shot of a GWR Class 4575 No. 5521 train.

Unique atmosphere: "Every railway, wherever it is in the world has its own unique atmosphere, be it a commuter line in Chicago with snow falling, a rural narrow-gauge railway in Romania in autumn glory or a high-speed line in France in high summer sun," says Robin Coombes. This is another Chicago shot at Tower 18 Junction.

Long exposure: A long exposure photo shows a British Rail Class 253 high speed train as it passes Coryton's Cove, Dawlish in the coastal region of Devon. "The objective of long exposure is to capture a sense of movement, not to record only a static scene," says Coombes.

Light and steam: In China, the photographers took this image of a Class SY No. 1771 on a local passenger train at the Tiefa Mine Railway.

Reflecting light: "We never use flash and rarely use a tripod, so we have to work with whatever light is available," says Robin Coombes. Pictured here: a line 6 train on the Paris Metro, captured on the Pont de Bir-Hakeim crossing the River Seine, Paris.

Mix and variety: There are some more traditional train photographs and more unconventional ones: "The joy is always in the mix and variety," says Robin Coombes. Pictured here: BR Britannia No. 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" train shot at Sydney Gardens in Bath, England.

Bilevel rail: There are still many trains the duo hope to add to their photography collection, but they've been enjoying ticking some off the list. Pictured here: a Metra F40PHM-2 No. 190 train -- that's a bi-level rail car -- at Chicago Union Station, Chicago.

Importance of company: Coombes says working with his son is "competitive, but great fun and company." Pictured here: train tracks at sunset in Cerhovice in the Czech Republic.

Multiple forms: A tram and a bike speed through the streets of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. "People are always at the heart of railways, we want to capture not just cold steel but the stories that are played out, the people who travel and work on the railway," says Coombes.

Tunnel vision: All these pictures feature in the Coombes' new book, "Railways at Night: from Dusk to Dawn" including this intriguing tunnel shot -- a BR (WR) Modified Hall No. 7903 train dubbed "Foremarke Hall" passes through the Green Tunnel on the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway.

Fireworks and rail: The Coombes men took a photograph of New Year fireworks exploding as a Czech Railways (CD) express approaches Prague.

Trains in the rain: "We are not 'technical' photographers, who worry about white balance, exposure settings etc, our view is that while you are fiddling with the camera you are not focused on capturing an unfolding scene," says Robin Coombes.
