1. Learn to like your traveling companion —
That'll be you. Traveling alone brings you face to face with yourself -- your failings, your strengths and your selfie skills.

2. Revel in your selfishness —
Want to snooze in your hotel all day? No one will tell you otherwise. Score another one for solo travel.

3. Lose the 'Helpless Rube' sign —
It's even less advisable to gawk at a map on the street when traveling alone. Sneak into a doorway.

4. Be realistic about the dangers —
Guess what -- you probably won't need these people on a solo trip. If you wander about alone where you live, it needn't be more scary when traveling.

5. Take yourself out to dinner —
Feel in the spotlight eating that meal for one? Solo dining can actually make you savor your food all the more.

6. Go easy on the social media —
Save the best stories for when you get back home -- absorb what's going on around you instead.

7. As for saving money, well ... —
You can't split the cost of a room or a meal traveling solo, but the experience itself is priceless. Accept the bad, relish the good.
