Engineering marvel: Welcome to Rolls-Royce Aerospace in Derby, in the East Midlands area of England. Here, some 1,000 people work on the Trent XWB engine line.

Fuel it up: The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB is a turbofan jet engine that powers up the Airbus A350 XWB. It's used on aircraft owned by Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa, among others.

Popular engine: There are currently over 1,800 Trent XWB engines in service or on order worldwide -- and Derby's where it all happens.

Test bed: After the engine's been built, it's tested on this enormous test facility.

Testing facility: At the test bed, testers experiment with how well the engine handles start ups, emergency shutdowns and even run-ins with birds.

Sniff test: The engine is also tested for cabin odor issues via a sniff test -- to avoid passengers experiencing any unpleasant smells in the cabin.

Ready for lift off: When the Trent XWB engine is ready for travel, it's taken apart, split in half via a hydraulic machine and transported on the back of a truck -- usually to Airbus' HQ in Toulouse in France.
