
Northern Cyprus. The descendants of donkeys left by Greek farmers fleeing south have free rein in the peninsula's beaches and hills, looking for handouts from tourists.

The buffer zone. Sandbags fortify the buffer zone that runs through the historic center of Nicosia, the capital of both the Republic of Cyprus and the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Beach border fence. Once a glamorous destination for beach vacations, the resort city of Varosha is now a ghost town with Mediterranean views.

Nicosia Airport. Evacuated during the conflict, the Nicosia airport has lain empty in the buffer zone for decades.

Saint Hilarion Castle. The Byzantine Saint Hilarion Castle fortifies an already-forbidding ridge in the Kyrenia mountains.

The northern side of Nicosia. Historic architecture flanks the buffer zone on both sides of Nicosia, but Greek signs give way to Turkish ones when crossing from south to north.

Karpaz. Golden beaches and crumbling cliffs outline the Karpaz Peninsula.

Famagusta Mosque. Flags of Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus fly from the Gothic facade of Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, which was built as a cathedral in the 14th century, then turned into a mosque under Ottoman rule.

Kantara Castle. Visitors to Kantara Castle must climb a steep, rocky trail that serves as natural protection for the Byzantine fortress.
