Misterbnb —
Misterbnb was created in 2013 after its founder (not pictured) experienced an uncomfortable experience at a homestay in Barcelona and had to cut short his visit.

Growing business —
Misterbnb is designed to be a safe space for gay men to rent apartments. It now has 33,500 hosts in 130 countries. In Paris (pictured) it has at least 2,500 registered properties.

Costa Rica —
Misterbnb founder Matthieu Jost says the concept has spread worldwide in unexpected ways. Gay-friendly San Francisco has been a tough market to break into, but rentals appeared in Bangkok with no marketing.

Amsterdam —
"Our company is gay and our hosts are gay-friendly. We are the only website that can guarantee that," says Jost.

Berlin —
Misterbnb's growth coincides with increased travel spending by the LGBT community. Marketing consultancy Out Now estimates its spending potential as $3.7 trillion.

London —
"I find the best part about hosting is making new international friends, multiplying contacts abroad, as well as the feeling of helping other people to get the best experience as a gay visitor in another city," says host Radoslav Soth.

New York —
Misterbnb advertises various known "gay destinations" -- such as Soho in London, the Marais in Paris or Le Village in Montreal -- but hosts also offer properties beyond neighborhoods typically popular among gays.
