Misery Beach: Western Australia's Misery Beach was recently named "Australia's Best Beach" for 2022 by Tourism Australia. This remote beach sits 400 kilometers (nearly 250 miles) south of WA's capital, Perth, near the pretty oceanside center of Albany.

Former whaling station: There's no official record of how the beach got its name, but some believe it relates to the gruesome whale hunts that took place nearby. Tourists can learn about this era at the Albany Historic Whaling Station, just 500 meters west of Misery Beach.

Albany Historic Whaling Station: The former whaling station contains a massive blue whale skeleton.

A bloody history: An old whaling ship on display near Misery Beach. Nearby King George Sound was home to whaling operations from the 1840s. It was the last whaling post in all of Australia before finally shutting in 1978.

National Anzac Centre: Another local attraction is Albany's National Anzac Centre, a modern war museum.

National Anzac Centre: Opened in 2014, the award-winning facility uses multimedia, interactive technology and historical artifacts to pay tribute to the more than 40,000 Australians and New Zealanders who left Albany in 1914, bound for the Great War.
