The art of the mileage run: Want to score free business class upgrades? A great way to elevate your status is to do a mileage run.

What is it?: A mileage run is a quick trip, taken with the main purpose of flying enough miles and spending enough money to qualify for elite status with an airline.

Understand how many miles you need: Want to reach top-tier status with your preferred airline? Know how many miles you'll need to fly and dollars you'll need to spend to achieve that. Then look at a calendar and figure out how many miles and dollars short you're going to be.

Pick the right flights: This is not a vacation. You're looking for the fastest routing with just enough miles flown and just enough dollars spent to get the job done. Be open-minded about where the journey will take you.

Choose the right airline: Just because you're trying for top-tier status with one airline does not mean you need to fly on that airline to secure it. In fact, in many cases, it means you shouldn't.

Enjoy your flights: If you've done this right, there's a good chance you'll be in a business class seat. So enjoy the early boarding, the meal and maybe even the lie-flat seat you'll be in for the next five to six to 12 hours.

Enjoy your benefits: Now that you've got that status, enjoy the fact that the airline will work harder to keep you happy. You'll enjoy better seats, shorter lines and most importantly: upgrades.
