
India salutes its workers: Whether you call it Labour Day, May Day or International Workers' Day, May 1 is the date when India salutes its huge workforce. Chennai: A carpenter works on a boat at a construction yard in Chennai. In 1923, the first May Day rally in India was held in this city on the southeast coast, back when it was called Madras. While the city is known for automobile manufacturing and IT services, traditional industries such as fishing still play a role.

Amritsar: Protests as well as rallies and parades are often part of the May Day holiday here. Activists from the Communist Party of India join factory workers to protest against policies they oppose.

Prayagraj: Women go about their hard labors at a construction site on the eve of May Day in 2018. Officially called Prayagraj but also known as Allahabad, this city of about 1.1 million people is between New Delhi and Kolkata.

Amritsar: An Indian laborer works in a brick kiln on the outskirts of Amritsar. The city is probably best known for its Golden Temple, the holiest temple in the Sikh religion.
