Southern Decadence (New Orleans): While this event is sometimes referred to as the "gay Mardi Gras," Gordon Summer, a producer and creative mastermind behind the celebration, promises that they are inclusive and even offer family-focused options so everyone can enjoy the splendor.

West Indian American Day Carnival (New York City): Throughout the five-day programming line up, the event will welcome upwards of 1.5 million people. Folks from surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods will of course be present in large numbers, but the organizers expect attendees from states near and far and even some from abroad.

Taste of Colorado (Denver): This Labor Day festival draws about 500,000 people over the course of the weekend. Denver Bronco fans may want to opt for the VIP ticket experience -- former football players will make appearances throughout each day of the festival.

Chicago Jazz Festival: This year's expanded festival started August 24 with performances all over the city in various jazz venues and clubs. The main event is center stage in Millennium Park, where renowned jazz musician Ramsey Lewis is scheduled to give his last performance.

Great Pershing Balloon Derby Brookfield, Missouri): This is the longest-running, continuously sanctioned balloon event in the country. Balloons fly up to several thousand feet, offering views of Missouri's lush landscapes. Cameras are encouraged.

Festival of Iowa Beers (Amana village, Iowa): In its inaugural year in 2005, the festival hosted approximately 300 beer lovers. In 2018, organizers have capped the event at 1,400, ensuring it retains its intimate appeal.

LA County Fair (Pomona, Los Angeles): Not Labor Day specific, this three-week affair nonetheless has a full slate of fair events taking place over the holiday weekend. A highlight will be a performance by KC & the Sunshine Band at 7:30 p.m. on Labor Day itself.
