
Japan's spectacular winter illuminations —
Extravagant winter light shows have been gaining popularity in Japan in recent years. Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Nagasaki is known for having a robot hotel as well as over-the-top illuminations.

The entire park, including the gardens and buildings, is wrapped in millions of light bulbs.

Technicolor river —
There's a neon boat that rides over Technicolor water. A 3D mapping show is also a big hit.

Toki No Sumika —
Toki No Sumika hosts the largest light show in Shizuoka Prefecture. It has a 450-meter twinkling tunnel and many bright sculptures.

The Kyoto Illumiere, set near a mountain and surrounded by gorgeous nature, features a field of bright lights highlighted by the event's glowing centerpiece, a towering blue-hued tree.

One of the highlights is the projection mapping show that runs four times a night. The brief-but-beautiful set replicates the the northern lights.

The Abeno Tennoji Illuminage's theme for this winter is "illumination zoo," housing glowing animals from panda bears to giraffes.

Centennial zoo —
The zoo is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

One of the finest winter illuminations in Japan's capital can be found in a place pretending to be another country altogether -- Tokyo German Village.

Ground murals —
Intricate, field-sized portraits constructed out of lights are a main highlight in the park.

To access the main area of Kobe Luminarie, one has to walk through a signature light tunnel.
