Pilot practice: The app was founded by two Australian pilots, John Hopkins and Christopher Symth, who want to revolutionize inflight entertainment: "There had to be a better way and a better solution that the incumbent existing traditional old moving map that we're used to seeing in the seat back or projected up the front of the cabin," Smyth tells CNN Travel.

Live updates: The app highlights places of interest, tourist information and details about events going on in the area. "The whole ethos of the app, the whole philosophy behind it, is to help passengers re-engage with flying," says Smyth.

Forging connections: Inflighto also offers an in-flight chat service, so you can easily communicate with flight crew and your fellow passengers. "We realized the PA system is pretty limiting for pilots who see a lot of interesting things out the cockpit window and might want to let passengers know that they're about to fly over something of interest, or perhaps there's a great Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis display, out the window," explains Smyth.

Marine monitoring: Flying over water? Inflighto tracks marine vessels below and get their details. It can also monitor weather to help predict when turbulence might hit. "Giving passengers real-time information about the weather and what they're about to fly over [...] just helps passengers get a better situational awareness, a better picture of the flight," says Smyth.

Staying connected: The app is reliant on in-flight Wi-Fi, but that is becoming increasingly more common: "The pace and scale of the roll out of inflight Wi-Fi globally is just enormous," says Smyth. "Hundreds and hundreds of millions of passengers per year are flying on aircraft with inflight Wi-Fi now."

Personal devices: Smyth says that the popularity of inflight Wi-Fi proves there's a market for the Inflighto app. "The airlines themselves aren't really interested in putting screens in the back of seats any-more, because as soon as they've installed a screen, it's obsolete," he says. "They really want to move to a paradigm where people are bringing their own devices and they don't have to pay for it."

Sky's the limit: Smyth and Hopkins hope the app will continue to grow and develop. "What we think is a really exciting opportunity to reinvigorate in-flight entertainment," says Smyth. "I guess we think we are reinvigorating it, reimagining it, disrupting the existing paradigm there of being beholden to what's in the seat pack in front of you."
