Kevin Lynch's Yearbnb project —
Originally from Chicago, Kevin Lynch stays only in Airbnbs in Hong Kong and writes about his stays on Tumblr and Instagram. He wants to go beyond that "expat bubble" by staying in neighborhoods far off the beaten trail.

Stay #52 Mui Wo —
For his stay in Lantau Island's Mui Wo, trying to find the place was half the fun. "The directions the host gave me were I forget how many turns and bridges and watch out for this building and that one," says Lynch.

Interesting neighborhoods —
"I look for neighborhoods that I've never been to as well as anything that just looks interesting -- good interesting or bad interesting," says Lynch.

Stay #36 Cheung Chau —
Lynch arrived at Cheung Chau during the Buddha's birthday celebration. "[My host] asked if I mind that there would be a parade passing right outside my door," says Lynch. "Turns out the place is 28 steps (I counted) away from the bun towers."

Bun festival —
"I found myself in the heart of this crazy unique bun festival," says Lynch. "It was one of the most memorable days and I had no idea what I was in for."

Stay #60 Sea Ranch —
Lynch recalls his stay at Sea Ranch. "I rode that ferry four times and each time there was no more than three people on it and no one talked to each other. It was creepy."

Southern Lantau Island —
"In the 1970s it was a happening place, but it has gone through various bankruptcies and now there are few people living there," says Lynch.

Stay #55 Discovery Bay —
When Lynch's daughter came to visit he wanted to find a special place to stay on. A 60-foot yacht in a luxury marina in Discovery Bay fit the bill.

Free extended stay —
After learning Lynch and his daughter's flight to Hong Kong was delayed, the host offered them another free night to make up for it.

Stay #8 Soho —
Highlight of the year for Lynch. He thought he was sleeping on the couch in the small Soho apartment before the host hit a button on the wall. "The ceiling lowers down and it stops just a couple centimeters above the table," says Lynch. "It was the bed."
