Cabrillo National Monument in the San Diego neighborhood of Point Loma was one of the author's hangouts in high school, and the National Park Service site is a wonderful spot to see the city.

The Old Point Loma Lighthouse, now part of Cabrillo National Monument, stood watch over the entrance to San Diego Bay starting in 1855. Since clouds and fog often obscured the light, the light was extinguished in 1891 and the keeper moved to a new lighthouse closer to the water.

Although the author grew up in Point Loma, she and her family chose to rent a Pacific Beach apartment with a view of Crystal Pier (shown here) for a great view and access to the beach. Surfers get the right side of the pier, while swimmers and boogie boarders stay to the left.
