Heading up the California coast, shown here, their plan was to head north through the Pacific Northwest, cross through the Midwest onto the East Coast, head down South and cross through desert country back to California.

Seattle, Washington —
Staying with a friend in Seattle, where this abandoned couch was found, the three friends bought seafood at Pike Place Market and made a seafood stew dinner to say thank you to their host.

Shown here in Eastern Washington, the young men would sometimes spend 12 to 14 hours per day riding. Boots and leather jackets made for riding were key to their comfort.

Six months in the planning, the trip seemed like a fun way to spend the summer between college and the rest of their lives. A sunset over Chief Joseph Scenic Byway in northwestern Wyoming is shown here.

The trio biked through 28 states and one Canadian province, discovering diners and other American wonders along the way. Boondocks, a 1950s themed diner in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is shown here.

The kindness of strangers was everywhere, including here at Echo Valley Farm in Wisconsin. "We pulled up, three dirty bikers, to this nice sustainable farm," said Brant Ozanich. "They brought us in like we were their own kids."

New York City in early August forced the bikers to reevaluate their wardrobe of jeans, leather jackets and boots. Shorts were the order of the day.

Photographer Dylan Ozanich caught the beauty of daily life across the country, including this sunset over an evening watering of the crops along Highway 60 in the Mississippi Delta.

Along the journey, the vastness and diversity of the American landscape became apparent. This tree-filled lagoon is located in Sam Houston Jones State Park in Louisiana.

The three riders saved the American Southwest for the last part of their journey, where they were buffeted by storms. Here, in a clear moment, is the Valley of the Gods in southeastern Utah, near Monument Valley.

The towering pines of Grand Canyon National Park were wet on this particular day, and the riders felt it. "With motorcycles you feel the scenery and the microclimate change," said Brant Ozanich.

Finding Main Street —
Brant, Dylan and Wyatt returned home to San Francisco on August 28, 2013, about two months after they departed from this same spot.
