Surf's up in Malibu: Surfers await the next break off the aptly named Surfrider Beach, located between Malibu Pier and Malibu Lagoon. Click through the gallery for more photos of CNN Travel's favorite spots in Malibu:

Malibu Pier: Originally built in 1905, Malibu Pier juts out 78 feet over the Pacific. It remains a popular spot for pier fishing -- and more recently, selfies.

Malibu Farm: Diners have two choices at Malibu Farm, the casual restaurant concept at the end of the pier, where you stand in line and take a number. Or a more formal dining option, with cocktails and waiters, above the beach.

Locally sourced: Malibu Farm sources ingredients locally. Helene Henderson, owner and founder, uses fresh eggs from her personal flock, as well as oranges and lemons from her own trees.

The Native Hotel: The subtle signage of The Native Hotel along the Pacific Coast Highway is easy to miss.

Damaged by fire: Inside is the small reception area of the Native Hotel. It's a revamped mid-century modern motel that has since been closed because of the Woolsey Fire in late 2018. It's expected to reopen in spring 2019.

An oasis: This chic retreat rests on 4.5 acres of land, which had landscaped bougainvillea and palm trees and surrounded by hiking trails.

A beach of one's own: From Point Dume, the beach is a slight hike down, which sometimes means you can have the place to yourself.

Nobu Ryokan: The 16-room Nobu Ryokan, a joint venture from Larry Ellison, Robert DeNiro, chef Nobu Matsuhisa and film producer Meir Teper, overlooks Carbon Beach (also known as Billionaires Beach).

A sense of quiet: The quiet heart of the Nobu Ryokan is its quiet courtyard, with a trickling fountain and towering palms.
