Safety first —
Lee Thompson says his Rio statue selfie looked scarier than it was. He had permission to be there and didn't take any risks.

Don't look down —
Want the world to gaze at your slack jowls? Take the shot from below. Everyone looks better from above, even you!

Overshoot —
Increase your chances of grabbing that perfect shot by monstering the shutter button. Somewhere in there will be at least one image in which you're not blinking and your smile doesn't make people want to punch you.

Tool up —
Yes, your $6,000 Nikon D4S with a 600mm zoom lens can photograph a flea's armpit from a mile away, but when it comes to taking selfies, it's almost useless. Go for GoPros, phonecams or simple shooters.

Seek the sun —
Unless you've dragged a professional lighting rig to the top of whatever landmark you're posing on or you're in the Witness Protection Program, keep the sun in front or to the side.

Rear view —
One person's selfie is another person's Twitter scandal. Think carefully about where you take your picture.

Go deep —
Yes, a selfie is mostly about you. But do at least try to give us something else to look at.

Stick it to the stick —
Billions of years of evolution have gifted humans with incredible natural tool for taking perfect selfies. They're called arms. Use them, or future generations may lose them.
