
City of Gold: Dubai Gold Souk is one of the busiest gold markets in the world, earning the UAE city the moniker "City of Gold."

Glittering array: More than 700 merchants now ply their trade in the area around Dubai Creek, primarily in the Gold Souk or in the Meena Bazaar.

Century of trade: The labyrinthine alleyways and carved wooden roofs of the Dubai Gold Souk haven't changed much in the last century, aside from some modernization.

Day's trading: This sprawling bazaar of gold traders, diamond merchants, and jewelers is filled with opulent displays.

Javeri Jewellery: Originally from Mumbai, brothers Jayant and Anil Javeri arrived in Dubai in 1971, the same year the United Arab Emirates was founded.

Meena Jewellers: The brothers behind the successful Meena Jewellers chain, Sanjay and Vinay Jethwani, took over the business from their father in 1993.

Mihir Vaya: Vaya entered the business by helping with his father's business when he was a boy. "It was probably nothing, those small jobs. But you felt so important," Vaya says.

Mehul Pethani: Pethani can be found most days at Cara Jewellers in the sprawling Gold and Diamond Park in Al Quoz, usually tending to one of his loyal customers.

Al Anwaar Jewellers: "Locals know us, we have grown with their culture and their blessings," says Rajesh Popley, founder of Al Anwaar Jewellers. "This region has done so much good for us."
