Elaborate project: Silversea Cruises has begun an extensive and expensive lengthening project on its luxury cruise ship Silver Spirit, which will add an extra 15 meters to it.

Dissection process: The 36,009-ton ship was cut into two at Fincantieri Shipyard in Palermo, Italy as part of the major renovation program.

World first: Described as a "rarely performed feat of maritime architecture," the operation is the first of its kind involving a luxury cruise ship, according to Silversea.

Two parts: The separation process was completed at Fincantieri Shipyard with "military precision," with Leoluca Orlando, the mayor of Palermo, present.

Stretched out: A pre-built 15-meter extension has already been inserted, and the separated ship is now being painstakingly reconnected by workers.

Big job: The work requires over 500 skilled workers and will take up approximately 450,000 man hours.

Major renovation: "Witnessing these breathtaking phases of the Silver Spirit lengthening project has filled us with pride and excitement," says Barbara Muckermann, chief marketing officer of Silversea.

New addition: The pre-built section will add 34 new suites to the ship and also make room for a new eight-restaurant configuration and a spa.

Added extras: The ship's capacity will increase by around 12% once the work is completed, creating "more space in public areas" and enhancing "Silver Spirit's facilities."

Maximum effect: According to Silversea, every section of the lengthening project "has been designed with guest enjoyment in mind."

Improved layout: "The lengthening and refurbishment of Silver Spirit will replicate the modern elegance of our latest vessel [Silver Muse] to make for a more luxurious traveling experience," adds Muckermann.

Ship enhancement: Silver Spirit's sky deck will also increase in length once renovations are complete, and a new spa, a free weights room and two new public spaces will be added.

Maritime architecture: The work requires approximately 110,000 meters of cabling, 846 tons of steel and 8,000 meters of piping.

Finishing touches: The project is due to be completed in May, with Silver Spirit, which offers seven-day trips between Civitavecchia (Rome) and Barcelona, commencing service on May 6, 2018.

Cherished ship: Silver Spirit set sail for the first time in 2009 and served as Silversea's largest luxury ship until Silver Muse was launched in April 2017.
