Bangkok's haunted places: The hot, bustling, modern city of Bangkok has a spooky side, if you know where to look.

How to find it: A new tour takes guests through some of the spookiest sites in Thailand's capital.

Dark shadows: "Ghosts, Spirits, and a Little Bit of Dark History" is led by Justin Dunne, a California native.

Heads up: Dunne warns that his walks are "exceptionally draining -- both physically and emotionally."

Setting the scene: Guests must sign a waiver confirming that "Any ghosts or black magic that attaches themselves to me will be my own responsibility."

The head shrinker: Our first stop is the Tha Prachan amulet market, a labyrinthine network of market stalls on the banks of the Chao Phraya river.

Vibe check: To stay out of spiritual trouble, Thais set up spirit houses all around the country.

Hiding in plain sight: Stops can include desolate shopping malls, former prisons, abandoned nightclubs and an allegedly haunted cinema.

History is everywhere: One of the rooms an old walk-up apartment building on a dimly lit side street used to be a back-alley abortion clinic.

Haunted hotel: Tripadvisor reviews describe it as "Bangkok's version of The Shining."

Ghostly presence: Drawing on Buddhist beliefs and folk tales, spirits, known as phi are widely believed to lurk around abandoned buildings and ancient trees.

Living history: Since many of the sites are still in use, Dunne keeps his tours small -- four people max -- to avoid bothering locals.

Say goodnight: Sometimes guests don't complete the tour, which can take as long as ten hours. One guest felt something pulling his hair and was so unnerved he left immediately.
