"Elephant seals are massive and can be ill-tempered," says Bernasconi, so you need to approach them with caution. "It's important to never forget that wild animals can be unpredictable."

"Penguins are particularly curious and generally friendly, so very easy to deal with," says Bernasconi. "I often like to include the landscape in my wildlife images, so that the link is clear between them and their environment."

"I always try to get as close as I can to any wildlife," Says Bernasconi. "I like to use the shortest lens possible, or take extreme close-ups with zoom lenses. As Robert Capa once said: 'If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough.'"

For landscape images, Bernasconi used filters to achieve the best possible in-camera exposure, and a sturdy carbon tripod with equipment to realize panorama shots.

"I usually approach wildlife in such a way as to let them get used to my presence, lying still on the ground if possible," explains Bernasconi. "I wait until they start to behave naturally, like I wasn't there at all."
