World's oldest rainforests: Belum-Temengor is a grouping of forest reserves in Malaysia's Perak state. Estimated to be more than 130 million years old, these rainforests are older even than their counterparts in the Amazon or the Congo.

Lake Temengor: Lake Temengor can be found inside the forest reserve complex, named Royal Belum State Park in 2007. River-damming in the 1970s turned the area's hills into mini islands, including Banding, which is a convenient launching pad to explore the area.

Endangered animals: The reserves are home to endangered mammals like the Asian elephant, the Malayan gaur, the Malayan tapir and the Malayan tiger.

World's largest blooms: The area home to rafflesia "corpse flowers," said to produce the largest individual bloom on earth. Unfortunately, they also give off an odor of decaying flesh.

Belum Rainforest Resort: The Belum Rainforest Resort is located on Banding Island, overlooking Lake Temengor in Malaysia's Belum-Temengor forest complex.

Visiting Jahai villages: Tours of the Royal Belum State Park often include visits to indigenous -- or orang asli ("original people") -- villages.
