Barcelona beach city: Golden sands and 300 days of sunshine each year mean Barcelona's shoreline buzzes with a carnival atmosphere year round. Here's our guide to the city's best beaches.

Barceloneta: The beach to head to if you're in the mood for a party is Barceloneta. When the sun goes down locals hang out strumming guitars and drinking beers.

Sant Sebastia: One of the oldest swimming areas in the city, in the morning Sant Sebastía draws an older crowd and families. Later it gives way to a more boisterous gathering.

Somorrostro: Until the mid-20th century Somorrostro hosted a shantytown that housed up to 15,000 people, but now it's home to the coastline's fanciest restaurants.

Nova Icaria: Once industrial wastelands, sand imports helped revive this stretch of shoreline in time for the 1992 Olympics.

Mar Bella: Besides pristine sand and the cleanest segment of water in the city, Mar Bella is also known for its liberal atmosphere, with a kids' playground at one end and a nudist section at the other.

Llevant: Amenities like restaurants become a little more sparse in these northernmost beaches, but great parking makes them ideal for family excursions.
