The aptly named Cloud City takes design cues from cloud formations, which are described by the Union of Architects of Kazakhstan as a symbol of peaceful sky and tranquility.

The structure will be 65 floors above the ground, with a total height of 280 meters. Each 'cloud block' consists of 9 floors and each will serve a different purpose, as offices, retail space, hotel and apartments. The open space in between each floor will be used for other recreational purposes.

This development, called the Affordable Box, is a housing complex designed specifically for those with lower household incomes, and utilizes a green design to reduce costs.

Union of Architects of Kazakhstan were dealt three main objectives for the building's design: it must be environmentally friendly, contain a parking lot, and have minimal construction costs. To save space and money, the basement serves as a parking lot, while a ventilated roof provides more room and a green landscape.

The largest man-made canal in history is China's Great Canal, which stretches up to 2,000 km long and dates back to the 5th century B.C. The China Green Canal Museum, designed by Archiland Consultant International, will host exhibitions about the canal's history.

The museum will be located on the edge of the canal in the town of Zhongbei. It's partially suspended over the canal itself, allowing for light to be naturally reflected indoors. Inside, there will be a 666 meter-high exhibition area, which leads visitors up towards a rooftop garden. The cooling effects of this garden, combined with the natural light, is said to reduce heat gain within the museum.

The Floating Suite is a future alternative to a traditional hotel room. It functions as a 25-square meter suite that floats on water and includes a bedroom, bathroom and outdoor space.

The suite is built of hardwood and composite materials, while the pontoon it is attached to is built of reinforced concrete and expanded polystyrene. The pontoon is fitted to the seabed using ground anchors and flexible ropes -- both of which are said to have minimal environmental impact on the seabed below.

ISSA Grotto/Hill House by PROARH —
The ISSA Grotto/Hill House was created according to the unique needs of its homeowner: it needed to fit within the steep hill surface, be produced at a minimal cost, and also provide a suitable environment for olive farming. The structure is slotted into the hills with "minimal alterations to the terrain" by adopting a cave-like grotto design. It utilizes solar panels to provide energy for heating and electricity. A rainwater recycling system provides water for drinking and for appliances. The architects also introduced a natural sun protection system which uses pine cones weaved into mesh panels. It received this year's winning title for the 'Future - Home' category.

The Konya Food & Agriculture University is divided into three different zones: an education and research zone, a social zone, and a 'techno-city' zone. The structure utilizes architectural developments such as green roofs, a solar panel field and rainwater collection facilities.

The majority of the university's buildings are slightly elevated above ground with open space underneath. This makes way for pedestrian and bike movements throughout the campus. One standout development is the circular courtyard, where the university's underground museum is based. The museum also doubles as a water recycling facility.

The Reservoir office takes its design notes from India's ancient stepwells. A natural pool of water lies at the center of the structure. Each floor of the office is designed to mimic a step from the well.
