Hatem Al-akeel is bringing a modern fashion sensibility to the thobe -- the traditional long-sleeved, ankle-length tunic worn by men throughout the Arabian Peninsula.

Hatem Al-akeel —
Al-akeel was inspired to start designing thobes when he worked in banking and wore one every day. In 2006 he launched Toby, a thobe-focused fashion label.

His thobes incorporate elements of both Asian and Western style. Al-akeel says his aim is to bring a Savile Row approach to thobe design.

According to Al-akeel, young Saudi men are more interested in fashion than the older generation, and are experimenting with different thobe styles.

Al-akeel has no formal fashion training. He credits his success to having a "good eye and an understanding of quality and good execution."

Toby's junior collection is extremely popular. "Adults are cautious about wearing more experimental styles but with kids, there's no limit -- the crazier you go, the more they love it!" says Al-akeel.

It is tradition to get a new thobe at Ramadan. "The mothers take it very seriously," says Al-akeel. "It's like a fashion competition between them as to whose child has the most fashionable thobe."

Sakood -- Al-Akeel's latest campagn for his Toby Femme collection -- celebrates the end of the women's driving ban in Saudi Arabia.
