Sidibe's work was appreciated the world over. He exhibited in art institutions across the globe, including at the New York's Museum of Modern Art and Metropolitan Museum of Art, California's Getty Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

In 2003, Sidibe became the first African to win the prestigious<a href="index.php?page=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hasselbladfoundation.org%2Fwp%2Fen%2F" target="_blank" target="_blank"> Hasselblad Award</a>.

Sidibe's photographs stood out for capturing moments of joy. In an interview with London's Daily Telegraph, he said: "For me, photography is all about youth. It's about a happy world full of joy, not some kid crying on a street corner or a sick person."

At the 2007 Venice Biennale, he was the first African and the first photographer to ever receive the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement.
