A former candy maker, the Zilberman didn't use just any old sugar to craft her sculptures. She used a specialty sugar for diabetics that allegedly doesn't melt as easily as normal sugar.

Zilberman got into candy-making partially due to the fact she couldn't afford an art studio, and had to use her kitchen instead. Being in the kitchen inspired her to use sugar as a material.

"Working with materials that absorb humidity and get sticky is really challenging, but the trade off of telling people the objects are candy is really rewarding," Zilberman said.

What happens to the sculptures after the show is over? That depends on what the buyer decides to do. They can leave them to slowly melt away or eat them.

"The part that really interests us specifically is the place between fine art and decorative art, functional not functional," said Oliver M. Furth, a co-founder of the gallery exhibiting the sculptures.

How does the artist think she is testing the boundaries of art? "I'm asking people to invest in objects that are too big to put in your mouth, but made of the same materials you'd find at a candy shop," Zilberman said.
