
TABELLEN 4: Tabellen 4, a building in Sollentuna high-security prison in Sweden, recently won an award for being environmentally friendly. Design features included insulting glass (with built-in alarms), a waste recycling room and a green roof.

BREEAM is an environmental assessment method operated by the UK-based Building Research Establishment (BRE). Its awards recognize the "most innovatively sustainable BREEAM rated buildings of the previous 12 months." Pictured is Wronia 31 in Warsaw, Poland, which won a BREEAM award and was commended for its facilities for cyclists.

COFCO LANDMARK: The Cofco Landmark in Beijing, China, is the first building in China to receive a BREEAM Excellent status. BRE said that the building "should act as a good exemplar to help drive standards higher in this rapidly developing region."

COFCO LANDMARK: The Landmark features two towers connected by a 13-story glass atrium. It has energy efficient elevators, real time monitoring of water use and an air quality monitoring system. At night, the atrium glows and terraced gardens on the podium roof offer views of the neighboring temple and park.

HOTEL QUEBRADA 17: This hotel on the island of Caya Cruz, Cuba, won the award for the Americas. The design aimed to minimize disturbance to the area's existing ecosystems, while creating comfortable and healthy spaces for guests and employees.

BINARIUM BUSINESS CENTER: This Business Center in Romania won the award for a "commercial project that was in use." The building was an empty factory for 15 years, before it was renovated into a workspace for technology and research companies. Its renovation involved using special wood and sustainable materials, as well as using natural light and greenery.

FALCONHOVEN L-BLOK APARTMENTS: This apartment block in Antwerp, Belgium, won a BREEAM award for homes in the design stage. It is a three-story block of 51 apartments.

FALCONHOVEN L-BLOK APARTMENTS: The developer hopes to offer sustainable living spaces that are suitable for a lifetime, as well as reducing energy and maintenance costs. BRE noted its "social benefits" made the project stand out.

NY HORTEN VIDEREGAENDE SKOLE: This is a design for an upper secondary school and is the first building in Norway to receive a BREEAM Outstanding certificate. Its construction processes were "fossil free."

NY HORTEN VIDEREGAENDE SKOLE: The school will cater for 1,200 students and makes extensive use of wood. The design using passive design measures -- taking advantage of the climate to reduce or eliminate the need for electric heating or cooling.

THE HOOVER BUILDING: The iconic Hoover Building in West London, UK, was converted to residential use after being unoccupied for more than a decade. The project included air source heat pump technology, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and energy monitoring devices. Secondary glazing and internal insulation were also added.

DELOITTE: The Deloitte offices in London scored a record 93.6% BREEAM score. At the time of certification, it was the highest scoring building within its category in the world.

DELOITTE: It was praised for reducing water consumption, minimizing waste production, and sourcing materials with a low environmental impact.
