Lyons would spend up to eight weeks at a time in Careiro and along the nearby Tupana River.

About half of the subjects in Lyons' book are trans, non-binary or "queer in some way," said the photographer, who himself identifies as queer.

The series also presents a portrait of the surrounding rainforest.

The photographer said the region faces growing environmental threats.

Lyons focuses on building relationships before picking up his camera, and he usually won't take people's portraits on the day he meets them.

"Like A River" borrows its title from a Brazilian poem of the same name.

Lyons photographed dozens of young people for the series.

"Like a River" is on show at the Rencontres d'Arles photo festival until Aug. 28, 2022. A book of the series, published by Loose Joints, is available now.
