"ONYX" is photographer Adrienne Raquel's first solo museum show.

Set in the Houston nightclub by the same name, "ONYX" features monumental portraits of exotic dancers.

Raquel nods to the visual language of '90s and 2000s hip-hop music videos in the series.

She was particularly inspired by director Hype Williams' only feature film, "Belly," from 1998. In the movie "everyone looks so Black and beautiful," Raquel said.

Exotic dancing has been a major cultural influence in music, fashion and film.

"Women in general stepping into their confidence and really expressing their sexuality... has become way more normalized in our society," Raquel said.

"ONYX" is on view until August 29, 2021 at Fotografiska in New York.
